The Confidante Appears to Have a Closing Date for Renovations

Hotels Hyatt Travel Trips

As you know, one of my favorite hotels in the US is The Confidante, an Unbound Collection property from Hyatt, located in Miami Beach. This hotel is located in Mid-Beach, just a short walk away from the famous South Beach.

We try to go every year since before COVID, only canceling for hurricanes. We love it so much that we hung a picture of it in our house!

It’s one of our favorite hotels, due to its fun atmosphere (think 60’s art-deco Miami), luxurious rooms, and fantastic service. Dua Lipa even filmed one of her music videos there. The location is also fantastic, as it’s not in South Beach, yet close enough where you can easily walk down there if you want.

In 2022, Sunstone Hotel Investors bought The Confidante for $232 million dollars (or, as the press release says, $684,000 per key). In revenue per night per year, that’s slightly less than $1,900 per night per room.

Sunstone Hotel Investors announced that they would put $60 million into renovating The Confidante and rebrand it as an Andaz. They have continually mentioned that it will happen, but renovations did not start in earnest until February 1st. Given that The Confidante completed renovations in October 2021, I was surprised that they’re putting a lot more money into the renovation. However, it appears that they’re focusing on a good portion of the renovation on the pool area. I’m interested to see how the new catwalk function will be used regularly.

The Confidante is No Longer Taking Reservations as of March 25th

The Confidante in Miami Beach appears to have a full closing date for renovations. I was alerted to the fact that Valentine’s Day in 2025 falls on a Friday, with President’s Day the following Monday. A trip to our favorite beachside hotel sounded like a great way to celebrate the long weekend.

I went to Hyatt’s website and put in my desired dates on points, and this is what I found.

February 13, 2025 – February 17, 2025 attempted points booking

I knew that over holiday weekends, The Confidante can play games with award availability, often putting in minimum stay requirements. Thus, I tried lengthening the stay to add another night, and this is what I saw.

February 13, 2025 – February 18, 2025 attempted points booking

I saw that there was Thompson South Beach coming live at some point, which reminded me of the upcoming renovation of The Confidante. (Note: I know The Confidante is turning into an Andaz.) I thus began playing with dates to see if the upcoming renovation would be at play.

For this exercise, given that points bookings can be trickier at times, I chose to only focus on cash bookings, since there are much fewer restrictions on those bookings.

I tried some dates for September…

September 5, 2024 – September 8, 2024 attempted booking

…and June…

June 13, 2024 – June 17, 2024 attempted booking

…and April.

April 11, 2024 – April 15, 2024 attempted booking

I knew that something was afoot. Thus, I started playing with dates around March.

It appears that The Confidante is finally shutting down for true renovations on Monday, March 25th. The last day that I could find where you could book a night is Sunday, March 24th.

I have reached out to The Confidante for comment and will update this post if I hear back from them.

Update: I have heard from The Confidante, and they have confirmed that this is accurate. This is being done by order of the Fire Marshal, as the renovations will make it unsafe for guests and hotel workers.

Conclusion

I am actually quite sad to see this hotel shift its branding. A lot of fellow bloggers had mixed reviews of the property, but, in my opinion, it’s a fantastic hotel. We always found friendly service, beautiful rooms, and great food and drinks (we didn’t find them outrageous for Miami Beach). I have fond memories of the property, but I’m excited to see what changes they make. I’ll make sure to get down there and post a review once it has been reopened.

What do you think about this iconic hotel closing? Are you excited for the renovations?
