Welcome to Class: Points & Miles 101 – Introduction

Points & Miles 101

Hello class! My name is Hunter, and I’m the Professor of Points. Welcome to Points & Miles 101.

When I first had the idea for this blog, my goal was originally to gear it towards academics and graduate students who needed help gaining access to cheap travel for conferences. Over time, even though academics are still near and dear to my heart, I had new plans in my future.

Long story short, I’m no longer in academia. However, I still think fondly of the days of teaching classes to students. Anyone who was in my class knew that I tried to make it as fun as possible and still teach foundational concepts of psychology…and I had a ton of fun doing it.

I now believe that one way I can give back is teaching people how to travel the world on a budget. Thus, rather than just posting random posts about travel, points, and miles, I hope to share my knowledge in a structured series of posts that not only help you gain the ability to travel budget-friendly, but to understand the underlying concepts that help you travel big for little money.

Whether you’ve finally decided that you’re going to travel around the world, are trying to take your kids on trips around the country, or simply want to be able to go see Grandma more often, it is my hope that this class will help you be able to travel well on a budget!

Ever since I started using points and miles to fund my travels, I’ve heard over and over, “I wish I could travel like you do. It’s just too complicated.” However, I want you to confidently say, “I want to learn to travel like you do, and I know I can do it!”

Each class will be numbered (so you can always know the order to catch up with if you miss a couple). In each bite-size post, I will discuss a concept that is integral to maximizing points and miles. Additionally, every few posts, I will present a case study of how I was either able to travel luxuriously on a budget or use points in a unique way that you may not have thought of.

I’ll keep a running tab of each of the classes below, so you can bookmark this page and keep coming back to it as you go through the series of posts as they are written and posted.

Additionally, when I was teaching undergraduates, I had an open door policy. I never actually had “office hours” per se, but I always made it very clear on the first day of class that they can always come by my office if my door was open (I kept it open about 25-30 hours a week), or they can always email me to set up a time to meet with me. While I don’t anticipate having my apartment door open for anyone to stop by whenever they want, if you have any questions or concerns, never hesitate to reach out via email (hunter@professorofpoints.com), the contact me page, or social media!

Would you use a course that breaks things down for you and help you travel on a budget? What topics would you would you find most helpful to cover?
