Whenever I travel, I always try my hardest to be sustainable. I usually bring my own water bottle, try to refill at water fountains, and always try to put recyclables in a recycling bin. (Whether or not it is actually recycled is another story.)
I’m not one of those people who typically drinks from a plastic water bottle, as the tap water in most of the places that I travel is perfectly healthy. However, sometimes, you really just need a fresh water bottle for a variety of reasons.
You may have forgotten your reusable water bottle, or you may be going out for a long day of sightseeing. You may not have any clean glasses in your hotel room, or you may be going to work out. Regardless, I think there is some uses for having a water bottle at certain times when traveling.
However, purchasing water bottles for everyone in your party can get needlessly expensive. Say you spend $20 on water bottles. Over 1 week, that’s $140!
How can you get free water bottles while traveling? Here are a couple of ideas:
Free Water Bottles while Traveling by Joining the Hotel Loyalty Program
Many hotels have water bottles in the room, but you have to pay for it. However, there is often a way out: joining the loyalty program!
I will gladly give an email address over for an item. It costs me nothing. Give a throwaway email address if you don’t actually want to give them your everyday email address.
Free Water Bottles while Traveling by Looking in the Hotel Club
The easiest way for those who have lounge access is to simply go grab some from the club. My dad and I recently stayed at the Hyatt Regency Seattle (which I will write up!). We grabbed all kinds of snacks and drinks from there to help tide us over throughout the day.
Many have bottles of water there all day, everyday. You can just go in whenever the club is open and grab a few bottles of water.
If you have club access, I recommend starting there first.
Free Water Bottles while Traveling in the Hotel Gym
If you don’t have club access, another place to look is in the hotel gym. Hotel brands are well aware of the fact that health and fitness is becoming more of a place to invest, as there are a large group of people who actually look to see how good the gym is. Heck, both Hilton and Hyatt have made splashy moves to connect with Peloton. Hyatt has invested in Miraval. Four Seasons is well-known for their extensive gyms (for one example, see here).
Something I’ve been increasingly notice over the past few years is that many gyms now stock water bottles instead of the community kegs with paper cups. I don’t know why this move has been made (I have ideas), but, at the same time, you can now freely access these gyms to see if they have water bottles in stock.
Just Ask the Front Desk
Many hotel chains offer a couple bottles of water daily for those with elite status. In a hotel with hundreds of rooms, the front desk isn’t going to take the time to check to see if you actually have elite status. They’ll often just give you a bottle of water as it’s cheaper for them to give water out than to spend the time checking to see if you actually have elite status and are entitled to water.
This might not work if they have one of those little stores that is run by the hotel. However, the worst they can do is say, “No.” No harm in trying!
Conclusion
This list is by no means exhaustive, but here are a couple of ways by which you might be able to get a few bottles of water for free while traveling. It’s important to stay hydrated, and hopefully this spurs some new ideas to get some extra water bottles.
